Chromix

Credits

Chromix credits everyone. Every essay sources its claims in the text, and every name opens into First Principles — a real, sourced entry on the person, place, or invention behind the making. We claim only what's derived from first principles, and we send you back to the original wherever we can. This page records the craft and the rights behind the site itself.

Colophon

Chromix is set in two typefaces: Syne for display and the wordmark, Switzer for everything else. The site is built with Astro and served as static pages from Cloudflare. The games run on a Supabase backend. The reading, the record, and the games share one body of work across two surfaces — the open web and the app.

Each essay wears one of four signature colors, by lens rather than subject:

Some essays are built to be operated; the interactive figures are original, and each degrades to a static version so the piece stays whole without scripts.

Artwork & image rights

All cover art and illustrations are original Chromix work. Where an essay depicts a real object, person, or moment, the drawing is a Chromix illustration after the source — an interpretation, not a reproduction — and the subject is credited in the caption. We don't publish third-party photographs without cleared rights; any that appear are listed below with their source and license.

Original artwork

Xerox PARC, 1970. The invention that fit, and the ones that walked out.
AI-generated illustration · Chromix — an imagined scene at the Palo Alto Research Center, not a photograph of one. No person depicted is a likeness of a named individual.
The Mother of All Demos, 1968. What was shown but never built.
Illustration · Chromix — after Douglas Engelbart's demonstration at Stanford Research Institute, 9 December 1968.
In 1960, Engelbart ran the numbers. Moore's Law is the half we kept.

Third-party images

None. No third-party photographs or illustrations appear anywhere on this site. Every image is original Chromix work.

Both lists above are generated at build time — the artwork credits from each essay's own frontmatter, the third-party list from the site's licence register. Neither is maintained by hand, so neither can drift from what the pages actually show. Sources for individual essays appear within each piece and in its First Principles entries.
